Recently, the college athletic department announced its partnership with Career Athletes to help provide additional career education, guidance, and networking opportunities for both current and former collegiate athletes. For those of you who are in the desired field of interest, regarding your career, you can become a mentor to the current undergraduate student-athletes. Do you remember what it felt like to walk in their shoes and endure the time limitations while being a student-athlete? MERGE opening a huge success!

It's just about 8p.m. and hundreds of people have passed through the Center for Visual Arts this evening. The show has been a huge success. The MERGE: Metro State Alumni Exhibition happens every five years, and so it's a notable evening for Metro State's successful art alumni. This evening is also one of the 3rd Friday's celebrated in the Santa Fe Arts District each month. And, as part of the Biennial of the Americas, the Passport to the Arts was organized to encourage tourists and residents to visit various art galleries in the area. The Plain & Fancy Ball will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Invesco Field at Mile High on the Club Level. This ballroom features beautiful views of the Auraria campus and will accommodate our goal of 800 attendees.

Attire …
Anything goes – everything from evening gowns and tuxedos to shorts and t-shirts. But everyone must wear their Plain & Fancy Bow-Tie. You’ll be presented with your tie upon entrance to the ball – the fun part is choosing where to put it! Past year’s eclectic range of ties have included one-of-a-kind ceramic works of art to special commemorative 25th anniversary editions.

Who Comes …
The history of the Plain & Fancy Ball is rich with notable figures. Each year a deserving individual (or individuals) is named the "Plain and Fancy Person of the Year.” This coveted award is given to those “…whose words and actions best reflect the ideals of the Metropolitan State College of Denver and its service and commitment to the greater Denver community.” The Persons of the Year for the 45th anniversary include Terrance Carroll, (Speaker of the House of Representatives in Colorado), Pat Cortez, (Sr. Vice President, Wells Fargo Bank), Leo Kiely III, (CEO, Miller Coors and former MSCD Foundation Board Member), Adele Phelan, (Chair, Metropolitan State College of Denver Board of Trustees), and Raymond Sutton, Jr. (Managing Partner, Baker & Hostetler and past Chair, MSCD Foundation). Also being honored, posthumously, is Harry Gianneschi, the first Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Metropolitan State College of Denver and the founder of the Plain & Fancy Ball.

Who Benefits …
Since 1988, hundreds of thousands of dollars has been raised for scholarships, academic programs and for moving our academic departments forward as we prepare our students to enter the workforce. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Metro State academic and non-academic programs, and as many deserving students, through scholarships, as possible.

What Sells …
Cumulatively, more than 2,000 items have been donated to the silent and live auctions at previous Plain & Fancy Balls. Gifts have included an automobile, vacations, diamonds, sports memorabilia, fine dining and even a “bit” part in a movie!

How to Participate …
Underwriting Opportunities and Corporate Tables
Corporations have the opportunity to underwrite a portion of the ball, with sponsorship tables ranging from $3,500 to $25,000. Each level offers a unique promotional package with ten seats per table. Corporate packages can also be customized for specific benefits (golf cart transportation to the Invesco entrance, an auction paddle marketing opportunity, etc.).
Individual Tickets
Individual tickets can be purchased for $150 each.

The 45th Anniversary Edition of the Plain & Fancy Ball is being facilitated by the Metro State Alumni Association, whose vision is: “To be a network of connected alumni who call others to action in support of the College.” However, the event is a collaborative fundraiser for the institution. The 45th Anniversary Host Committee is chaired by Metro State President Dr. Stephen Jordan and his wife Ruth.

Fun and refined, Metro State College of Denver alumni Sean Brown's art delivers smiles

Sean Brown hopes his artwork will make you smile. The playful colors, shapes and textures of each of his unique, handmade pieces of jewelry and framed art are sure to make you crack a grin.

Brown creates one-of-a-kind fired ceramic clay and mixed-media jewelry, as well as larger works to brighten the walls of any home's décor. Contemporary and compelling are both appropriate adjectives for Brown's work. The “C” words come from his creative use of form and juxtaposition of textures.

Brown is well known for his works depicting dogs, cats and, especially, birds. Each animal is whimsically shaped by hand with ceramic clay. This is just the beginning of Brown's elaborate process. Next, vibrant colors of underglazes are applied, and the pieces are fired in a kiln at temperatures reaching 2,000 degrees. After a second firing, Brown uses special pens and fine brushes to apply an overglaze of 22-karat gold. The pieces are placed back into the kiln a third time, with some works receiving up to five firings.

After the pieces cool enough to handle, Brown thoroughly inspects each one and occasionally sandblasts them to give a rich, matte finish. Certain pieces are adorned with more elements, typically 14-karat gold beads, sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Brown's birds receive soft, natural parrot and pheasant feathers to soften the slick glazed look of the fired clay.

Each material in Brown's work adds yet another layer of visual interest. The arduous processes and strict attention to details and materials used gives Brown's work a very distinct personality. The end results are always both fun and refined. Whether the finished product is a piece of wearable art or a delightful find for your home, Sean Brown's work brings joy.

Brown has been showing off his work publicly since 1989 and has used his art to support such important organizations as the Denver SafeHouse, Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and more. He holds a fine arts degree from the Metropolitan State College in Denver and still calls the city home. Brown is trekking up the mountain this weekend to host a demonstration and show off his newest works at the Art on a Whim gallery in Breckenridge.

Metro State men edge Carroll by 2

DENVER, Colo. — Reggie Evans buried a pair of free throws with 4 seconds left as Metro State escaped with a 72-70 victory over Carroll College on Friday night in Denver.

The Fighting Saints fell to 7-4 this season while the Roadrunners improved to 7-2.

Carroll’s Chris Medina hit 4 of 8 from the outside for 14 points in the first half, helping the Saints connect on 6 of 14 from beyond the arc.

Metro’s Donte Nicholas hit two free throws with just under 10 minutes to play, sparking an 8-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by Minor, the first triple for the Roadrunners on the night....
